Bates is Drogheda hero

Guy Bates was the Drogheda hero with a last minute winner to clinch the first league title in the club's history at an ecstatic United Park.

Eamon Zayed headed home to give Drogheda the lead on the half hour after Graham Gartland had helped the ball across goal.

Cork battled back and levelled on 65 minutes when Liam Kearney's cross was deflected into his own net by Drogheda defender Jason Gavin.

But in dramatic fashion, Bates, such a hero in recent games, scored his fourth goal in six game to clinch it as the watched ticked into the last minute.
