Newcastle striker Michael Owen is fit for Monday night’s Barclays Premier League clash with Tottenham after returning from England’s trip to Russia unharmed.

Fears had been raised about the 27-year-old’s participation on the plastic pitch at the Luzhniki Stadium so soon after surgery, but he suffered no ill-effects.

He could be joined in the squad by £5.8m summer signing Joey Barton after his recovery from a fractured metatarsal, while Claudio Cacapa (groin) and Mark Viduka (calf) could also make it.

Shola Ameobi (groin) is back in training but unlikely to be involved, while Alan Smith is suspended and Damien Duff (ankle), Peter Ramage (knee) and Celestine Babayaro and Stephen Carr (both hamstring) are still out.

Provisional squad: Given, Harper, N’Zogbia, Enrique, Rozehnal, Taylor, Cacapa, Faye, Edgar, Beye, Milner, Geremi, Butt, Emre, Barton, Pattison, Viduka, Martins, Owen.
