Weather may scupper France game
France’s Euro 2008 qualifier with the Faroe Islands, scheduled for tomorrow, is in doubt after Les Bleus’ plane was unable to land tonight because of fog and high winds.
It was reported that the World Cup runners-up were forced to land in the Norwegian town of Bergen after their plane twice circled the Faroes but was unable to set down.
The Turkish refereeing team is reportedly stranded in Copenhagen while the UEFA delegate is in Iceland, according to the report, which speculates that the game could be played on Sunday if the players and officials manage to complete their journeys tomorrow.
French team officials were considering a formal request to postpone the match, according to L’Equipe.
The French had to stop twice – at Aberdeen and Bergen – because of the bad conditions and spent 10 hours today in airports or on board planes. Another possibility tomorrow is a five-hour ferry journey from Bergen to the Faroes.
UEFA rules require the team to arrive the night before the game while if the game were to be played on Sunday then it would give both France and the Faroes less recovery time for their midweek fixtures.
