Bayern beckon for Bolton
Bolton have been drawn with German giants Bayern Munich in the group stage of the UEFA Cup.
This morningâs draw in Nyon also pitted Tottenham against Anderlecht of Belgium in a rematch of the two-legged 1984 final, which the English club won on penalties.
Everton avoided the competitionâs big guns but will face Blackburnâs conquerors, Larissa of Greece.
Aberdeen face a tough task after being drawn in a five-club pool which also includes Atletico Madrid and Panathinaikos.
As well as Bayern, who are currently leading the Bundesliga after a blistering start to their campaign, Bolton will take on Red Star Belgrade, who were knocked out of the Champions League in the qualifying stage by Rangers.
The Premier League strugglersâ group is completed by Portuguese side Braga and Aris Salonika of Greece.
Chairman Phil Gartside hailed a âfantasticâ draw for his team.
He told Sky Sports News: âBeing greedy you want to play Bayern Munich at home, because you get a better TV deal from broadcasters.
âWhen youâre playing a second-rate team from Macedonia and 20,000 people turn up it probably spells out that people are interested.
âWe all said Bayern Munich in the group would be fantastic, so weâre all very happy.â
Gartside believes facing Bayern could provide a major boost to the Trottersâ flagging season under new manager Sammy Lee.
âWeâve had a tough start,â he added.
âYouâre looking for signs and things which might start your season off and this could be a great fillip for everybody.â
