Sunderland legend Ian Porterfield’s funeral will take place in Surrey next Thursday afternoon.

The service for Porterfield, who lost his fight against colon cancer on Tuesday evening at the age of 61, will be held at St Anne’s Church in Church Road, Bagshot, at 2.30pm on Thursday, September 20, and be followed by a private cremation at Woking Crematorium.

His family have requested family flowers only and have requested that donations in lieu be made to the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital charity.

Porterfield, who died with wife Glenda at his side, scored the goal which won Sunderland the 1973 FA Cup final against Don Revie’s all-star Leeds side, and went on to enjoy a successful management career.
