Eriksson backs Corluka as central defender

Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson believes Vedran Corluka has the makings of a top-class central defender.

Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson believes Vedran Corluka has the makings of a top-class central defender.

Corluka, 21, could be switched to that role from right-back when they face Aston Villa after the international break as skipper Richard Dunne is suspended.

“Vedran is a very good centre half,” Eriksson told the Manchester Evening News.

“I like players who are calm in possession.

“He is not an aggressive type of defender in that central position but he is an elegant defender.

“Despite his age, he knows how to solve problems and reads the game so well.

“He is another young player who will be a big part of the side as it grows together.”
