Beckham's quick turnaround draws a blank

David Beckham started for the Los Angeles Galaxy in their derby against Chivas USA last night, less than 30 hours after playing for England against Germany at Wembley.

The former England captain was unable to inspire his club side, and Chivas cruised to a 3-0 win – with Maykel Galindo scoring two goals.

Beckham managed just two shots, both off target, and was involved in a skirmish in the 48th minute.

After Beckham was fouled by midfielder Jesse Marsch, Chivas defender Alex Zotinca and Galaxy midfielder Kevin Harmse were ejected for violent conduct.

Zotinca head-butted Harmse, who had punched Zotinca.

Beckham flew into Los Angeles yesterday afternoon, after having played 90 minutes in London, and was named in the starting line-up 30 minutes before the match against Chivas.

After a scoreless first half, Galindo took a long ball which was miscontrolled by Galaxy defender Kyle Veris and sent a quick shot past goalkeeper Joe Cannon to give Chivas a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute.

It did not take long for Galindo to strike again. He picked up his 10th goal of the season after taking a pass from Francisco Mendoza in the 69th minute, doubling Chivas’ lead.

Mendoza followed with his first goal of the season in the 88th minute. The Mexican midfielder took a pass from Sacha Kljestan and curled in a left-footed shot from 12 yards out to extend Chivas’ advantage to 3-0.

Chivas goalkeeper Brad Guzan needed to make just one save en route to his eighth clean sheet of the season.
