A goal from Man-of-the-Match Ken Oman put holders Derry safely through to the quarter-finals of the FAI Ford Cup, but they were made to battle every each of the way by First Divison promotion hopefuls Finn Harps before a crowd of 5,000 at Ballybofey.

Harps' bright start, in which Conor Gethins brought a save out of Pat Jennings, counted for nothing as Derry took the lead on nine minutes for what proved the winner.

Oman was picked out from Kevin Deery's corner and the big central defender headed past James Gallagher.

Harps pressed hard for much of the rest of the game without really threatening Jennings' goal.

Derry almost doubled their winning margin on 68 minutes, but veteran Peter Hutton headed over from another Deery delivery.
