Emerton hoping for Benni boost
Brett Emerton hopes Blackburn are able to stave off interest from their Premier League rivals and keep striker Benni McCarthy at the club.
The former Porto player has caught the eye after a stunning debut season in England, scoring 24 goals in all competitions.
Chelsea are believed to be one of a number of clubs keen on the South African, but Emerton insists he could again be a key player for Blackburn.
“Benni is a fantastic player and he had a great season last year,” said the 28-year-old.
“Any player would love to have him in their team, I hope he stays but obviously that is a decision he has to make.”
Meanwhile Emerton, who is currently on duty with Australia in Thailand at the AFC Asian Cup, hopes manager Mark Hughes will strengthen the side further before the start of the new campaign.
So far Hughes has added Maceo Rigters from NAC Breda and Gunnar Nielsen from Danish side BK Frem Copenhagen to the squad.
And when asked whether he thought Blackburn would be making more additions, Emerton said: “I hope so because any players who can strengthen the squad we welcome with open arms.
“Hopefully there will be a few additions to the team which will strengthen our chances of doing well this season.
