Newcastle close in on bad boy Barton

Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce made his first transfer breakthrough of the summer last night when he persuaded Joey Barton his future was on Tyneside.

The 24-year-old is understood to have agreed a five-year deal after undergoing a medical yesterday afternoon following talks with the Magpies' boss as West Ham attempted to hijack a £5.5m deal.
