Warnock's future unclear

Neil Warnock’s future as Sheffield United manager is shrouded in confusion after Blades plc chairman Kevin McCabe called a press conference for 11am today.

Warnock has been mulling over his future at Bramall Lane since the club’s relegation to the Championship on Sunday, with Blades officials apparently willing to give him time to make a decision.

And there is a good chance today’s press conference could have simply been called by McCabe in order to clarify the latest situation with regard to possible legal action against West Ham.

However the smart money is on Warnock calling time on his Blades tenure having expressed his unhappiness with the club’s latest new contract offer prior to Sunday’s defeat to Wigan.

Had Warnock kept his side in the Premiership he would have been offered a reported £750,000 deal, making him the lowest paid top-flight boss.

That figure has now reduced to around £450,000 after relegation.

And with a group of his carefully-nurtured stars such as Phil Jagielka now likely to head for the exit doors, Warnock may believe the time has come to end his reign.

Meanwhile Blades assistant boss Stuart McCall gave the strongest indication yet that Warnock may follow Paul Jewell’s example in a radio interview yesterday.

McCall, who is very close to Warnock had told TalkSport: “We’ll see what happens but it wouldn’t surprise me if that was the gaffer’s last game in charge.”
