Aston Villa chief executive Richard FitzGerald has promised Martin O’Neill “significant transfer funds” this summer to help the club realise their eventual ambition of Champions League football.

O’Neill has already splashed out on strengthening his squad this season with the signings of Stiliyan Petrov, Ashley Young, John Carew and Shaun Maloney.
