Ricardo Carvalho has been ruled out of Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final second leg clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday.

Carvalho suffered a first-half knee injury in the 2-2 draw with Bolton at Stamford Bridge which left Manchester United with a five-point lead in the Barclays Premiership title race.

Afterwards Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho revealed that Carvalho would miss out when the Blues tackle Liverpool with a 1-0 first leg lead.

Mourinho declared: “He is definitely out. He has injured his knee and it is a big blow for us. He has been our best defender this season – it is as simple as that.

“We lost at Liverpool in the Premiership without him and we go to Anfield again without him.

“But when we lost in the league we had to play Paulo Ferreira at centre-back. We have better options for centre-back this time.”
