Bookmaker suspends betting on PFA awards
Bookmaker Paddy Power has suspended betting on this season's PFA Player of the Year Awards following an avalanche of bets for hot favourite Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Manchester United winger had been a short-priced 4/9 favourite when the nominations were announced on Monday.
The number of bets drove his price down to 1/10 in less than 24 hours. More than 95% of all bets placed with Paddy Power were on Ronaldo, including several substantial four figure sums.
"We tried to keep the market open as long as possible but punters just kept coming for the Portu-geezer," said Paddy Power. "A Ronaldo win will certainly cost us but we're hardly the first to have been put on our backsides by his wizardry this season."
