Maradona discharged from hospital

Diego Maradona's doctor has revealed the Argentina legend was discharged from hospital in Buenos Aires on Tuesday night after his condition unexpectedly improved.

The 1986 World Cup-winning captain was rushed to Guemes hospital two weeks ago after falling ill with what was later described as an over-indulgence in smoking, drinking and eating.

Doctor Alfredo Cahe told reporters: "He has had a surprising improvement."

Hector Pezzella, a leading doctor at Guemes hospital, added: "He was told about the importance of the problem he had when he arrived and what he has to do from now on."

Pezzella said that Maradona was "conscious" at the time of leaving hospital, adding that the 46-year-old lost seven kilograms during his stay.

Maradona is expected to travel with his family to the La Prairie clinic in Switzerland to continue his treatment.

Cahe added: "I'd like to spend some time alone with him, accompanied just by the people he wants to be with.

"When I think about Switzerland, it is not because of the country's characteristics, but because he can be with his closest family and relatives and it would help him a lot."
