Long handed Irish debut

Reading striker Shane Long was handed his Republic of Ireland debut for tonight’s Euro 2008 qualifier with San Marino at the Serravalle Stadium.

With Royals team-mate Kevin Doyle and Sunderland forward Stephen Elliott out through injury, Long partnered Republic captain Robbie Keane in attack.

Preston’s Wayne Henderson took over from the injured Shay Given in goal, while Stephen Ireland was awarded his third cap following his recent fine performances in midfield for Manchester City.

Manager Steve Staunton named four potential debutants on the bench in Stephen Hunt, Andy Keogh, Anthony Stokes and Darron Gibson.
