Instead, coach Jose Mourinho opted to play Michael Essien alongside Ricardo Carvalho in defence. Left-back Ashley Cole was relegated to the bench with Wayne Bridge replacing him.

There was no place in midfield for Michael Ballack or Claude Makelele – both rested.

Forest were unchanged from the side that drew with Swansea last time out.

Chelsea: Cech, Geremi, Essien, Carvalho, Bridge, Wright-Phillips, Diarra, Lampard, Mikel, Drogba, Shevchenko. Subs: Cudicini, Ashley Cole, Kalou, Morais, Woods.
