Reading defender Ibrahima Sonko is to undergo an exploratory operation today to ascertain the extent of a knee injury.

The Senegal centre-back sustained the injury after falling awkwardly in the first half of the Royals’ 3-1 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday.

A scan of the joint yesterday proved inconclusive and so Sonko will have a minor operation in order to gain a better assessment of the damage.

Striker Dave Kitson will have a scan today after he sustained a thigh injury in the warm-up prior to kick-off in the Blades match.

Physio Jon Fearn told the club’s website, www.readingfc.co.uk: “We don’t think Kits has done anything major but we’ll get a scan done just to be certain.”
