Everton close in on Fernandes loan

Portuguese midfielder Manuel Fernandes is having a medical at Everton with a view to an initial six-month loan move from Benfica.

The 20-year-old had returned to Benfica after Portsmouth decided against completing a move for the central midfielder who has played for Portugal at Under-21 and senior level.

Fernandes played against Everton in a 2-0 win for Portsmouth at Fratton Park in December.

Now he could become a key part of the Merseysiders’ push for a European place, following yesterday’s 2-0 win at Wigan which lifted them into seventh place in the Premier League.

Everton chief executive Keith Wyness has confirmed the negotiations, saying: “We have been in discussions with Benfica and representatives regarding the possibility of a loan move until the end of the season.

“As part of that process he is currently undergoing a medical at Bellefield. However, the transaction is not complete.”

Fernandes has played 12 times this term for Pompey, and made his senior international debut against Ireland in February 2005.

Meanwhile Everton were waiting for an update on Andy Johnson’s ankle injury.

The England striker hurt his left ankle in a challenge with Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland.

Preliminary checks revealed "no obvious fracture" but Johnson’s condition was being assessed further today.
