Bury face FA over Cup clanger

Bury’s involvement in this season’s FA Cup is under scrutiny after they fielded an ineligible player in their second-round replay win over Chester.

The Shakers won 3-1 at the Deva Stadium on Tuesday but officials of the League Two club will meet a Challenge Cup sub-committee next week to answer charges after midfielder Stephen Turnbull, who is on loan at Gigg Lane from Hartlepool, took part in the tie.

“On Wednesday 20 December, club secretary Jill Neville, manager Chris Casper and director Iain Mills will be attending a Challenge Cup sub-committee at which the charges of playing an unregistered player will be considered,” read a club statement.

“There are approximately four options that the Challenge Cup sub-committee have: to do nothing, to fine the club, to order a replay or to remove Bury Football Club from this season’s FA Cup competition.”
