Athlone Town boss Michael O'Connor has made his first close-season signing today.
Paul McTiernan, who left Sligo Rovers in recent weeks, has put pen to paper on a deal that will see him play in the blue and black in 2007.
Boyle native, McTiernan, started 19 games in the Premier Division last season, finding the back of the net six times, with two more in the FAI Cup.
McTiernan was at the Showgrounds for six seasons, having joined from junior club Boyle Celtic in 2001/02 and scored 44 First Division goals in five seasons. He received the Soccer Writers Association Player of the Month Award for June of this year.
Speaking to athlonetownfc.com about his new signing, Michael O'Connor said: "I'm delighted. Paul became available because he wouldn't go full-time with Sligo Rovers, with regards his job.
"But he is a proven goal scorer in both divisions and I'm delighted that he has come to Athlone. It's great to see Athlone in the market for top quality players.
"We said at the start that we were going to bring in seven or eight players. Paul is the first of them. They are good players, and that is all we're going to bring in, good players.
"We have to be serious next year on the pitch. We are going into our new stadium, so let's get a team on the pitch that matches that. All the talking has to be done on the pitch next season."
Staying on from last season's side are: Adrian Carberry, Steve Feeney, Declan Fallon, Steven Gavin, Robbie Hamm, Des Hope, Istvan Lakatos, Eric Lavine, Brian McCarthy, Noel McGee, Danny O'Leary, Ian Rossiter, Carmine Russo, Stephen Ryan, Jim Sheridan and Mark Sherlock.
