Derry blew abject Sligo away to run up a 3-0 lead within half an hour at the Brandywell as they moved menacingly to within four points of leaders Shelbourne with a game in hand.

Darren Kelly’s looping header from Gareth McGlynn’s 18th-minute corner began the rout.

Sean Hargan burst forward to drill in a low shot that deflected off Rovers skipper Michael McNamara to enter the net on 24 minutes.

Six minutes later the Rovers goal was breached for a third time when Stephen O’Flynn ended a terrific solo run from the left with a shot that gave keeper John O’Hara no chance.

Mark Farren, who scored twice in Saturday’s win at Longford, added Derry’s fourth goal on 67 minutes when collecting O’Flynn’s pass to shoot low past O’Hara.
