Sligo need extra time to get past Killester
Killester United 3 Sligo Rovers 4 (After extra-time)
Paul McTiernan broke Killester hearts with an extra-time winner as Sligo had to battle every each of the way to squeeze into the semi-finals of the FAI Carlsberg Cup.
Killester keeper Lee Murphy fumbled a shot from Faz Kuduzovic in the 13th minute of extra-time and McTiernan followed up to drill the ball home and kill off the plucky AUL champions who had come from behind three times.
It looked like going to plan as substitute John Bellew headed Sligo in front on 12 minutes.
But Killester were level seven minutes later when Michael Keogh volleyed home Shane Dunne’s cross.
Sligo regained the lead on 43 minutes when Adam Hughes headed home Harpal Singh’s corner.
But back came the junior side to level six minutes after the break when David Lacey scooped home after John O’Hara failed to hold David Sheridan’s header.
Poor marking, again from another corner, this time from Faz Kuduzovic, brought Sligo’s third goal on 67 minutes with Gavin Peers blasting to the roof of the net after his initial header came back off a post.
But Keogh forced extra-time when his amazing 78th minute 40-yard free-kick deceived O’Hara to end up in the net.
