Derry through to League Cup final

Gareth McGlynn hit a brace as holders Derry eased into the eircom League Cup final for a record ninth time and a date with rivals Shelbourne in two weeks.

Despite nine changes to the side held scoreless by UCD last Sunday, Derry had much of the ball in the first half without really threatening the Limerick goal before a desperately small crowd of about 400.

Colm Heffernan wasted a good chance for Limerick within minutes of the restart while Shaun Holmes had to head off the line from Brian Buckley before Derry took command to score three times inside 12 minutes.

Paddy McCourt worked the oracle for the opener on 57 minutes when weaving to the end line to cross for McGlynn to sidefoot home.

Four minutes later Stephen O’Flynn added the second when shooting home the rebound after Limerick keeper Justin O’Neill could only parry a shot from Mark Farren.

McGlynn then sealed it on 69 minutes with his second. Limerick failed to adequately clear a corner and the midfielder’s drilled shot took a strong deflection to enter the net.
