The Republic of Ireland creditably emerged goalless from the first half of their opening Euro 2008 qualifier against Germany.

After captain Robbie Keane headed narrowly wide after 80 seconds, the majority of the chances then fell Germany’s way at Stuttgart’s Gottlieb-Daimler Stadion.

The most notable saw goalkeeper Shay Given make two outstanding saves to deny Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski in quick succession.
