Athlone Town 3 Finn Harps 2 (After extra-time)

Goals in extra-time from Damien Rushe and Stevie Gavin booked Athlone's place in the last eight of the FAI Carlsberg Cup tonight after this epic tussle with fellow First Division hopefuls Finn Harps.

Noel Magee gave Athlone the lead on 58 minutes when shooting home from close range from Eric Lavine’s cross.

But Harps hit back within six minutes. Town keeper Danny O’Leary spilled a cross from Chris Malseed and Barry Curran scooped home the rebound.

With a penalty shoot-out looming, Rushe struck to drill home from the edge of the area to put Athlone in front on 116 minutes.

Gavin then sealed their quarter-final berth three minutes later.

Ryan McGavigan got Harps’ consolation goal in the final minute.
