The only English club in the top four leagues without a goal to their name, City’s preparations for Arsenal’s visit were badly hindered by the furore surrounding Ben Thatcher’s disgraceful challenge on Pedro Mendes in midweek.

Banned by his club and facing FA disciplinary action, Thatcher’s place went to Stephen Jordan as City took on a Gunners side who welcomed back Thierry Henry and Jens Lehmann and offered a league debut to new signing Thomas Rosicky.
