Manchester United produced a five-star start to the Barclays Premiership season to rout sorry Fulham.

Playing together for the first time since their World Cup altercation, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo both scored in an incredible opening 20 minutes which saw the Red Devils establish a four-goal lead.

Louis Saha began the onslaught, with Ian Pearce netting an own goal before Rooney wrapped up the comprehensive win after half-time after a Rio Ferdinand own goal.

Having netted twice himself, Rooney then set up what should have been a second for Ronaldo with a precise through ball which set the winger running straight at the Fulham goal.

His shot beat Niemi, but also the keeper’s right-hand post, bringing a cry of anguish from Ronaldo and a rueful smile to Rooney’s face.

Another quick passing move provided Scholes with a shooting chance 10 minutes from time, which Niemi proved equal to.
