Carroll recalled to Northern Ireland squad

West Ham goalkeeper Roy Carroll has been recalled to the Northern Ireland squad for the friendly against Finland in Helsinki on Wednesday.

Carroll has recovered from a back operation that limited him to 19 appearances for his club last season.

He is one of only two Premiership players in Lawrie Sanchez’s 17-man squad – Keith Gillespie of Sheffield United is the other.

Sanchez is using the game as a warm-up to the opening Euro 2008 qualifier against Iceland at Windsor Park on September 2.

He has called up two promising youngsters in Nottingham Forest midfielder Sammy Clingan and Burnley striker Kyle Lafferty.

Damien Johnson will sit out this week’s game as he is suspended for the first two qualifiers while Steve Davis is injured.
