Captain Stephen McManus punished a rare mistake by St Mirren goalkeeper Chris Smith to give Celtic the half-time lead at Parkhead.

The Bank of Scotland Premier League new boys came to Glasgow as shock leaders after opening up their campaign with two wins.

Smith had threatened to frustrate the Hoops with a great save from Maciej Zurawski, but he misjudged a Shunsuke Nakamura corner, leaving defender McManus to head home in the 28th minute.
