United make FA appeal

Alex Ferguson has expressed his dismay that Manchester United have been forced to appeal against the possibility of Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes starting the Premiership season with three-match suspensions.

The Red Devils’ duo were both sent off in last Friday’s friendly win over Porto in Amsterdam.

Rooney’s dismissal in particular looked harsh but with referee Ruud Bossen submitting reports into the separate incidents, the Football Association have been forced to launch disciplinary proceedings.

“I am surprised it has carried on this far,” said Ferguson. “We will be appealing.”
