Crouch left on bench for Haifa game

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez opted to leave England striker Peter Crouch on the bench for the Champions League third qualifying round first leg against Maccabi Haifa at Anfield.

Instead, he elected for Craig Bellamy as a lone striker on his home debut, supported by five midfielders, including Boudewijn Zenden.

Steven Gerrard looks set to have an attacking role, with Jermaine Pennant, also making his competitive debut, starting wide on the right.

Liverpool are aiming to extend their club record of 12 successive victories in all competitions.

However, they failed to score in their last four matches in the Chamions League last season.

The champions of Israel have Yaniv Katan up front. The West Ham striker is back at his former club on loan.
