Charlton make Bolanos move

Charlton have signed Costa Rica winger Christian Bolanos on a one-year loan from Deportivo Saprissa.

Bolanos, who played in two matches for his country at the World Cup, had been on trial with Iain Dowie’s side and impressed sufficiently in pre-season games to earn a contract.

The deal is subject to a work permit being granted, while Charlton have secured an option to buy Bolanos before the loan period expires.

The 22-year-old previously had a 10-day trial with Liverpool, after impressing against the Reds at the Club World Championship last December, and said: “It has always been my ambition to play in the English Premiership.

“Several European teams showed an interest in me but I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have spent at the club and have been made very welcome.

“I am now flying back to Costa Rica to bring back my girlfriend and daughter, and I know they will love it here. I can’t wait for the season to start.”

His deal follows yesterday’s capture of Djimi Traore from Liverpool and Amady Faye from Newcastle, each player costing £2m (€3m) and signing three-year deals.
