Vieira named new France captain

France coach Raymond Domenech has named Patrick Vieira as his new captain.

Vieira replaces Zinedine Zidane who retired following the World Cup, and will be handed the armband for the friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina on August 16.

Domenech appeared on television programme Telefoot to discuss his plans for the friendly, although he does not plan to name a squad until Wednesday.

“I will not pick a team based on their form at the moment but with the intention of preparing for the (Euro 2008) qualifying matches against Georgia and Italy,” he said.

The main point of interest will be whether Lyon goalkeeper Gregory Coupet is confirmed as the new number one in place of Fabien Barthez, but Domenech would not be drawn on the matter.

“The list will come on Wednesday,” he said. “Be a little patient.”
