Spurs overcome Italian champions
Tottenham 2 Inter Milan 1
A superb goal from Teemu Tainio helped Tottenham overcome recently-crowned Italian champions Inter Milan in a pre-season friendly at White Hart Lane.
Summer signing Dimitar Berbatov made his home debut but Finnish midfielder Tainio stole the show with a 50-yard run and long-range shot which proved the difference between the teams.
The hosts were the first to truly threaten in the 19th minute as Robbie Keane’s volley was punched away by Inter goalkeeper Francesco Toldo.
Toldo was at full stretch to deny Keane with another volley 13 minutes later, tipping the Republic of Ireland captain’s effort around the post.
Spurs took the lead after 35 minutes when Edgar Davids’ pass found Tainio and his shot took a key deflection on its way past Toldo.
However, the sides went in level at half-time when Brazilian full-back Maicon let fly from 25 yards in the 43rd minute and though goalkeeper Radek Cerny was able to parry it, Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins pounced on the rebound.
Spurs fans left the ground happy though after Tainio’s stunning winner.
