Nesta struggling to be fit

Italy defender Alessandro Nesta is unlikely to recover in time for Friday's World Cup quarter-final clash with Ukraine.

Nesta, who missed Monday's last-gasp second-round win over Australia, is still struggling with a muscular injury.

"His condition has improved," said Azzurri team doctor Enrico Castellaci. "But it will not be easy for him to recover in time for the game against Ukraine.

"Our intention still is to have him fit as soon as possible."

With usual replacement Marco Materazzi suspended for Friday's clash in Hamburg following his dismissal against the Australians, Lippi is hoping AC Milan star Nesta will be available for selection.

If he fails to recover, Palermo's Andrea Barzagli will play alongside captain Fabio Cannavaro at the heart of defence.
