A header from Ronaldo on the stroke of half-time pulled Brazil level against Japan after the Asian champions took a surprise lead in the 34th minute against the defending champions.

A devastating finish from Keiji Tamada in the 34th minute and a superb performance between the posts by goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi saw Japan take the lead in their must-win Group F game.

However, the much-criticised Ronaldo converted a header right on the whistle to cancel out Japan’s advantage.
