Limerick dump holders out of Cup
Drogheda United 0 Limerick FC 1
Shane Guerin was the toast of Limerick soccer as his goal dumped holders Drogheda United out of the FAI Carlsberg Cup in this second round replay.
And there was no fluke about it either as the First Division leaders deserved their win, dominating the game for good spells against the lacklustre Premier Division leaders.
Limerick started well, forcing five corners in the opening 15 minutes, almost taking the lead from one of them on ten minutes.
Kevin Waters’ delivery was met by the head of Brian Buckley with Drogheda keeper Dan Connor having to make a good save.
Drogheda continued to struggle against a resilient and well-organised Limerick and they fell behind to what proved the winner three minutes into the second half.
Under-21 international Stephen Bradley lost possession in midfield and Paul Rose put Guerin in to shoot past Connor.
