Drogs to play UEFA Cup games in Dalymount

Drogheda United have today announced that they will play their UEFA Cup games at Dalymount Park.

The Phibsboro venue will host the Drogs’ European adventure with the first qualifying round games scheduled to be played on July 13 and 27.

The capacity for the home tie has been set at 8,000.

Dalymount Park has been a favourite away venue for the Drogs in recent years and the Boynesiders will expect a capacity crowd for only the second european campaign in the club’s history.

In the 1983-84 season Drogheda United came up against an outstanding Tottenham Hotspur side in the same competition with the north London club going on to win the competition outright.

Over 7,000 fans turned up on a wet and windy September day to see Drogheda United play their first-ever game in Europe.

Speaking from Dalymount Park today, club chairman Vincent Hoey expressed his thanks to Bohemians for their support and co operation.

Mr Hoey said: “We expect to see a huge crowd coming from Drogheda to Dalymount Park and we’re looking forward to the Dalymount Roar being replaced by The Roar of The Drogs … for one evening at least."

According to well-respected European football website, hosted by the Dutch statistician Bert Kassies, Drogheda United will commence their UEFA Cup campaign in the northern region first qualifying round and it is expected that the Drogs will be drawn against a team from either Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Latvia or Lithuania.
