Terry's winning mentality keeps Chelsea in cup

John Terry’s hatred of losing helped Chelsea take a giant step closer to their first league and cup double as he scored the matchwinner against Newcastle.

Captain Terry’s fourth-minute winner earned Chelsea a place in the semi-finals and finished Alan Shearer’s hopes of a fairytale end to is Newcastle career.

Former England striker Shearer was hoping to win the FA cup in his final season as a professional, but Terry’s early goal ended his dream and Shearer ended the night accusing Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips of diving after Robbie Elliott was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the closing stages.

Chelsea were determined to bounce back after their shock Barclays Premiership defeat to Fulham on Sunday and Terry provided just the tonic they needed when he swept home Damien Duff’s low corner.

“The boss has made me really hate losing,” admitted Terry. “Come to that, I hate it when we draw as well.

“It is the same for all the lads. The gaffer has instilled such a winning mentality and losing really hurts.”
