Smertin talks of Russian return

Charlton midfielder Alexei Smertin claims he has received an offer from a Russian club to return home.

The 30-year-old, on loan at The Valley from Chelsea, is with the Russian national team as they prepare to take on world champions Brazil in Moscow tomorrow night.

It is unclear whether Smertin, who joined Chelsea from French side Bordeaux in 2003, is talking about a permanent move or a loan but suggests something could happen.

“I’ve received an offer from a Russian club and now my agent is considering that,” he said.

“But I can’t say anything definitely. I missed the last Charlton game due to a slight injury but now I feel good.”
