Stubborn S'hampton succumb to Dyer strike

Kieron Dyer fired Newcastle into the FA Cup quarter-finals in his first start since August as stubborn Southampton finally succumbed.

The England midfielder brought an end to his injury nightmare with a 68th-minute strike to put the Magpies through after the Saints had threatened to take the tie to a replay.

Newcastle dominated the first half and only Polish keeper Bartosz Bialkowski and the woodwork kept them at bay, but Shay Given had to pull off a fine second-half save to deny Kenwyne Jones and Peter Madsen fired over the top before Dyer won the day.
