Barcelona have confirmed utility man Gabri is hoping to leave the Spanish champions and secure a move to the English Premiership, with West Ham thought to be leading the chase.

The 26-year-old has struggled to hold down a place in the Barca side this season after missing large parts of the last two years through injury, and is eager to further his career away from the Nou Camp.

Club spokesman Toni Ruiz told PA Sport: “The player has informed us of his desire to move to the Premiership in order to have more playing time.”

The Catalan press have linked Gabri with West Ham but Barcelona refused to confirm whether that was the player’s preferred option.

Ruiz did say, however, that the current Primera Liga leaders would not stand in the way of a player who has come through the youth team ranks to become a Spanish international.

He added: “Barcelona are looking to help him (Gabri).”

Gabri’s current contract is due to expire in the summer but Ruiz hinted Barca would be willing to let him go on a free transfer.
