Former Newcastle defender Steve Watson saw Anthony Le Tallec’s 71st minute effort deflect past Tomasz Kuszczak off his out-stretched leg to give Mick McCarthy’s men three priceless points.

Nathan Ellington blasted a clear 35th minute effort over the bar while Julio Arca also missed a sitter for rock-bottom Sunderland five minutes after the break.
