Rix hails former Hearts supremo

Hearts head coach Graham Rix has paid tribute to former chairman Wallace Mercer, who died yesterday afternoon.

The 59-year-old passed away at Edinburgh’s Western General hospital after losing a short battle with cancer.

Mercer spent 13 years at the Tynecastle club and, despite selling his shares in 1994, was an outspoken and colourful character who was still keen to offer his views on Hearts right up until his illness.

Most recently, he spoke out in defence of Rix when his appointment as George Burley’s successor in November was met by opposition from supporters as a result of his past.

Rix spoke of the “encouragement and advice” offered to him by the Hearts legend.

He said: “I want to take the opportunity to comment on the sad news about Wallace Mercer.

“Wallace was extremely welcoming to me when I arrived at Tynecastle in November.

“He took time to offer me encouraging words and advice, which I genuinely appreciated.

“Although I only knew him for a short time, he was very supportive to me whenever we spoke.”

Hearts are currently enjoying one of their most successful campaigns in recent memory, sitting second in the Bank of Scotland Premier League, seven points behind leaders Celtic.

And Rix believes any success enjoyed by the Gorgie outfit is a result of the solid foundations laid by Mercer during his tenure.

He added: “I can appreciate what a significant loss it must be to our supporters.

“Without Wallace Mercer we probably would not have a football club.

“I offer my sincere condolences to Wallace’s family and friends.”
