Sunderland striker Jon Stead passed up a golden opportunity to open his account for the club when he fired straight at Nigel Martyn after being put clean through on goal.

The former Blackburn man took advantage of a kind ricochet in midfield on the half-hour to break clear, but Martyn stood tall to save comfortably.
