Lancaster keen on Gazza

Paul Gascoigne could be set for a swift return to management in the new year with Nationwide Conference North outfit Lancaster City.

The former England international was sacked a fortnight ago from Kettering Town following allegations of improper conduct by chairman Imraan Ladak.

However, the 38-year-old has made it clear he is keen to return to football as soon as possible – and is believed to be considering investing in the cash-strapped Conference side.

Lancaster director and club secretary Barry Newsham told PA Sport: “Talks have taken place between Paul’s agent and the chairman.

“Originally when Paul was at Kettering he signed Ryan-Zico Black from us and that is where the link has arisen from.”

Phil Wilson quit as Lancaster boss last weekend, claiming dire financial problems had made the job virtually untenable.

Wilson’s former assistant Peter Ward and Gary Bauress have been put in temporary charge until January when the club will make a decision on who will take over on a full-time basis.

Lancaster chairman Steve Johnston said: “I have had a phone call from his [Gascoigne’s] agent, but that is as far as it goes at the moment. There has been no official application.”

Gascoigne was dismissed by Kettering after just 39 days in charge following reports he was drinking before, during and after games.

However, the former Newcastle and Tottenham midfielder – who has a well-documented history of alcohol problems – hit back with counter-claims Ladak had been meddling in team affairs.
