Coach backing Gazza over Kettering exit
Paul Davis, Kettering coach under Paul Gascoigne, has backed the former England international’s claims that chairman Imraan Ladak had interfered with team selection.
Gascoigne left his job as manager of the Conference North side yesterday with Ladak alleging he had been “under the influence of alcohol before, during and after several first-team games and training sessions”.
The one-time Rangers, Lazio and Tottenham midfielder retorted that he had been forced out by Ladak’s attempts to influence team selection and his failure to finance transfers.
And Davis – who left Kettering with Gascoigne – told Sky Sports News: “I believe he was put under unnecessary pressure, not just with team selection but other issues away from football.”
Following Gascoigne’s arrest after an alleged assault outside a city centre hotel in Liverpool overnight, Davis does not expect the former midfielder to go through with his promise to attend Kettering’s match at Alfreton Town.
He said: “I understand Paul is up in Liverpool so I don’t see how he that’s going to be possible.
“But I’m sure Paul will come back. He’s a fighter.”
Davis denied Gascoigne had drunk alcohol at Kettering, apart from one occasion - admitted to by Gascoigne – when he had a double brandy before a match, and insisted he had the support of the Kettering squad.
“He has the full backing of all the players,” added Davis.
“He’s had their backing and their respect and the club is going in the right direction.”
