Shearer not in the clear yet

Newcastle skipper Alan Shearer may still face a Football Association charge following an incident involving Everton defender David Weir at the weekend.

The FA must decide whether the former England captain used an elbow on the Scottish centre-back as the pair challenged for the ball in the game at Goodison Park.

Match referee Howard Webb awarded a free-kick to Weir but insists he did not see Shearer use an elbow. If the FA deem that the striker did lash out, he could still be charged.

Webb told the Daily Mail: “I didn’t see an elbow. All I saw was a foul as Shearer backed into Weir. If the replay shows something else, the FA can deal with it retrospectively. I’ll have a look and the FA can decide.”
