Schwarzer misses out

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is out of tomorrow night’s UEFA Cup clash with AZ Alkmaar in Holland after failing to recover from a shoulder injury.

The 33-year-old Australia international suffered the problem during his country’s World Cup play-off victory over Uruguay last week and remained on Teesside as youngster David Knight was added to the 19-man party as back-up to Brad Jones.

However, Schwarzer’s compatriot Mark Viduka was on the plane which left for the Netherlands today after consulting a specialist over his Achilles injury, as was Austrian defender Emanuel Pogatetz despite suffering a broken nose during Sunday’s 3-2 Premiership win over Fulham.

Provisional squad: Jones, Knight, Parnaby, Queudrue, Pogatetz, Southgate, Ehiogu, Riggott, Bates, Doriva, Boateng, Kennedy, Morrison, Johnson, Nemeth, Maccarone, Hasselbaink, Viduka, Yakubu.
